Jamie Carragher has said during Sky Sports’ live Premier League coverage, which was broadcast on 12th August, that he doesn’t believe Jack Wilshere is as good a signing for West Ham United as many people have suggested.

Wilshere joined West Ham on a free transfer from Arsenal, amid great excitement about what he could do at the London Stadium.

However, Carragher believes that the additions of Felipe Anderson and Andriy Yarmolenko are actually more impressive.

Carragher said: “I don’t think it’s as good as singing as people are saying. He’s still got to bring a lot more. If I was a West Ham fan I’d be more excited about the wide players than Jack Wilshere.”

Wilshere was selected to start in West Ham’s first game of the season yesterday, but he made little impact against Liverpool.

West Ham were battered, as they slipped to a 4-0 defeat at Anfield, with Wilshere barely affecting play.

The new signing was ineffectual as an attacking midfielder, and then struggled to protect his defence when moved into a deeper role after half-time.

Wilshere still looks set to have a key role for West Ham over the season, and will hope that his performances improve as he becomes more used to his new teammates.
