Jamie Carragher names who Everton should look to make Ronald Koeman’s long-term successor

Jamie Carragher has suggested that Everton should appoint David Unsworth until the end of the season, and then look at a current Premier League boss.

Jamie Carragher has told The Telegraph that if he was in charge of appointing Ronald Koeman’s successor at Everton, he would give David Unsworth the job for the rest of the season and then look to approach Watford boss Marco Silva next summer.

The Toffees announced on Monday that they had parted company with the Dutchman after their 5-2 home defeat to Arsenal on Sunday left them in the Premier League’s relegation zone, with two league wins coming all season and having suffered five defeats in their last seven.

The next appointment is obviously crucial given Everton’s currently precarious position in the table. But Carragher has suggested that he would give current under-23 boss Unsworth the role for the rest of the campaign, and then turn to the Hornets boss at the end of the term as Koeman’s long-term successor.

“Everton are now faced with two options. Replace Koeman immediately, which makes Sean Dyche look the most realistic target. Or give Under-23 manager David Unsworth temporary charge, trust him to banish any relegation fears and wait until the end of the season to appoint full-time when there will be far more options available, which could bring a target like Marco Silva into the equation,” he told The Telegraph.

“My choice would be Silva, who in a short period at Hull and Watford has shown he has something about him.”

With Unsworth yet to manage in the top flight, it would arguably be a gamble for the Toffees to give him the job until the end of the campaign when they appear to be in some trouble after the early stages of the season.

But with the 44-year-old knowing the squad and the club very well, there may well be a number of fans who like the idea of their former defender getting the job for the time-being.

And if he manages to keep them up – which their squad is certainly strong enough to do – and they do manage to get Silva on board and he manages to replicate the work that he has done at Vicarage Road so far, then Carragher’s suggestion would seemingly look like a masterstroke.
