Jamie Carragher had only good things to say about the Tottenham Hotspur man.
Jamie Carragher has told The Mail that Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli is his breakthrough star of 2016.
The 20-year-old midfielder picked PFA Player of the Year last term for a fine debut season with Tottenham which included 10 Premier League goals and nine assists.
He has had a hard time reaching the high standard he set for himself last season but it is obvious that Alli is a major rising star in football.
The England international does not turn 21 until April and Carragher admits that he has to keep reminding himself of the starlet’s age.
“You have to remind yourself from time to time that Alli has yet to turn 21,” he said to The Mail.
“He plays with such confidence and looks so comfortable in the Premier League that you would have him down for being a good few years older.
“It was only right that he was named PFA Young Player of the Year in April for his role in the Tottenham title challenge and though he did not have the impact on Euro 2016 he would have liked, Alli has finished 2016 strongly. His star is firmly ascending.”
The pressure is on Tottenham tomorrow night as Mauricio Pochettino’s side travel to Southampton in the knowledge that their top-four rivals have all won this week.
Spurs are four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who left it late to beat West Brom on Boxing Day, and only a victory will do. Defeat at St Mary’s wouldn’t be detrimental by any means, but it would not feel quite the same.
