Jamie Carragher is fearing that Liverpool will drop points at Newcastle during their Premier League title run-in because his former club will still be in the Champions League and because of Rafa Benitez.

The Sky Sports pundit jokingly stated that Benitez will not want the Reds to win the league, and in particular Jurgen Klopp because he failed in that task himself during his time at Anfield.

At this moment in time, Klopp’s side are sitting top of the Premier League table, two points ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

Speaking to Monday Night Football on Sky Sports Premier League (08/04/2019 at 7:35 pm), Carragher explained why his former team will drop points at St James’ Park when they meet in the league.

“There are two reasons [why Liverpool will drop points at Newcastle],” Carragher told Sky Sports PL. “I think Liverpool will get to the CL semi-final. And I think Newcastle will be in between those two games.

“I think Rafa Benitez as a manager, the way he sets up. I think he will make it difficult for Liverpool. People may say ‘Oh, he’s an ex-Liverpool manager, he’d like to see them win the league’.

“I think if he had won the league himself [at Liverpool], he would say ‘Jurgen can win one’. I’m thinking that he might be thinking ‘I don’t want Jurgen to do something I haven’t done’.”

Liverpool will play a number of games, both in the league and in Europe, before they travel to the North East to take on their former manager Benitez next month.

In between those matches, they will play the likes of Porto in Europe, Chelsea, already-relegated Huddersfield and relegation-threatened Cardiff before meeting the Magpies during the penultimate week of the season.

There is no doubt that the Merseyside club will still be in with a chance of winning the title, it’s just a matter of whether they’ll be in the driving seat or a number of points behind City.
