Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has posted on his Instagram story ‘Good luck to Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa’ after he was appointed their new Head Coach.

Carragher then added on Sky Sports on Thursday afternoon: “I would like to say Steven Gerrard in some ways (getting the better deal compared to Villa). It’s his first job in the Premier League.

“When you are going to the Premier League to get your first job as big as Villa. I think it’s fantastic for Stevie. A real opportunity for him to push for European places.

“To get a club as big as Aston Villa, who I think is one of the biggest clubs in this country, and I class as a top ten club at least, then it’s Stevie (who has got the better deal).”

The Sky pundit wasn’t the only former Liverpool player reacting to the news from Villa Park because John Arne Riise also shared his thoughts.

The former left-back posted on his own Instagram story: ‘Good luck kid. You got this mate. Proud of you @stevengerrard.’

This is a big risk for Villa to bring in Gerrard and a big call for the Englishman to leave Rangers.

Everything was rosy in the garden at Ibrox for the former midfielder, but he clearly felt, after winning the Scottish Premiership title last season, that it was the right time for him to move on.

It seems as though Gerrard has got a mixed reaction to leaving Rangers.

On one hand, he stopped Celtic from winning ten-in-a-row, but then others will question why he has left midway through the season.

It remains to be seen how he will be perceived in the long run, but his sole focus will now be on trying to push Villa up the Premier League table.

They are sitting in the bottom half and are on a wretched run of five defeats on the bounce.
