Jamie Carragher believes there are major problems inside Liverpool because their director of football keeps changing too regularly.

Liverpool’s transfer business this summer has been ‘embarrassing’ in the eyes of Jamie Carragher but he doesn’t think it’s FSG’s fault.

Reds fans are absolutely baffled at the moment.

Deals to bring in midfielders Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were exciting, helping Liverpool build their new engine room.

Liverpool then lost Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, leaving Jurgen Klopp to search for a new holding midfielder or two.

Liverpool had been focused on signing Romeo Lavia but had been unwilling to pay Southampton’s £50million asking price.

The Reds then moved for Moises Caicedo but the Brighton and Hove Albion has instead decided to sign for Chelsea.

Lavia was the top target once again but Liverpool have messed this up royally as the Southampton talent has now picked Chelsea too.

Liverpool’s main midfield targets have both picked Chelsea and leave Liverpool to scramble in the last couple of weeks of the transfer window.

Jamie Carragher critical of Liverpool transfer approach

Liverpool fans can’t believe what they’re witnessing right now and Reds legend Jamie Carragher feels the same way.

Carragher has been speaking to Sky Sports and refused to point the finger of blame at the Fenway Sports Group.

The former Reds defender think the problems started when Michael Edwards left the club and started issues in Liverpool’s transfer planning.

Second-in-command Julian Ward took over but quickly left that role too before former Wolfsburg man Jorg Schmadtke came in for the summer.

Carragher thinks you simply ‘have to ask’ just why these directors of football keep leaving the club with Schmadtke just weeks away from moving on himself.

Carragher doesn’t know the reason but feels there is a problem ‘behind the scenes’ with Liverpool now struggling to get deals done.

The pundit added that Liverpool’s pursuits of Caicedo and Lavia have been ‘embarrassing’ and an ‘absolute mess’, with plenty of work to be done before September arrives.

“People think I defend FSG, I have no relationship with them at all – but this is not on the owners – this is on the structure of the football club when you go back two years, when Liverpool were the model for every team in Europe, not just in Premier League, to follow.”

“They had a guy called Michael Edwards at the top of the club in terms of a director of football, a transfer committee or whatever name you want put on it beneath him, it worked well, he left. His number two took over, he was in the job for six months, and he then moved on. You have to ask the reasons why these people are actually moving on from the football club. I don’t know, I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.”

“A guy has come in from Germany, who has got a relationship with Jurgen Klopp, he’s only there for the summer – that’s all he’s there for, and then he moves on and Liverpool will then get another director of football.”

“In the space of 18 months Liverpool have had four directors of football. They haven’t got deals done; that is your job in that role to get deals over the line. The two players Liverpool have bought had buyout clauses – there’s no negotiating, there’s no big deal, you just meet the buyout clause.”

“Liverpool have not got deals over the line and it’s been embarrassing with the fact that you start with Lavia, don’t pay a certain amount, then you go Caicedo, yes you get something agreed – that’s why I will not be critical of the owners because they were willing to pay £110 million and break the transfer record, but to go with him when he has been talking to Chelsea for three months, now to go back to Lavia… it’s just an absolute mess,” he added.
