Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports that Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson is struggling at Goodison Park because he has no striker to take advantage of his creativity.

Everton sold Romelu Lukaku in the summer transfer window and, despite considerable investment, they have failed to find a new number nine.

The Toffees have tried out a number of different players up-front, but they have had limited success with each one.

Sigurdsson has also struggled to find his top form, and is still looking for his first Premier League goal for Everton.

And Carragher feels that Everton’s lack of forward options is harming Sigurdsson’s performances.

“A lot of the time he was being judged on his assists at Swansea,” Carragher said. “But you always need someone to finish it off. If Everton have not got that out-and-out goalscorer they have very few players to get on the end of crosses so Sigurdsson’s numbers will be badly affected by the lack of a striker.”

Everton fans have been frustrated with Ronald Koeman’s tactic of using Sigurdsson out wide, rather than in his more favoured central position.

Sigurdsson is likely to start again in Everton’s next fixture, which comes against Lyon in the Europa League tomorrow evening.
