Jamie Carragher hammers Daniel Levy, applauds Tottenham manager

Carragher spoke at length prior to Tottenham’s 1-0 loss to Manchester City.

Jamie Carragher has hammered Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy on Sky Sports prior to Spurs’ loss against Manchester City, but was full of praise for Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs suffered a 1-0 loss to the Premier League champions, with Riyad Mahrez scoring the only goal of the game for City inside the first six minutes after excellent work from Raheem Sterling.

Carragher highlighted Spurs’ lack of spending on Monday night before the two sides took to the Wembley pitch, which stands at a net spend of just £29million since Pochettino took over in 2014.

The Liverpool legend slammed chairman Levy for Spurs’ lack of spending, but stated that the only reason Spurs remain a competitive top-four side is due to Pochettino’s work as manager.

“What he’s [Pochettino] done, is unbelievable,” Carragher said. “The money spent, he has got Tottenham into the top four and consistently overachieved. Tottenham, in the next five years, this team will break up and the manager will leave.

“No-one is going to be going back and looking at net spend. People will ask, did they win anything? At this moment, the answer is probably going to be no. But no way, should that manager and those players get that thrown at them.

“If anyone is going to get it thrown at them, it will be Daniel Levy and the board. Net spend of £29million is not acceptable. Teams who get promoted have a bigger net spend than that. The fact Tottenham are where they are, is because of Pochettino.”

Spurs’ loss to City sees them remain in fifth place in the Premier League and five points off of City, who remain at the top of the table – despite the north Londoners best ever start to a league campaign.

Pochettino must help his players bounce back immediately from their narrow loss to take on West Ham United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, before going up against Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs fans agree with Carragher’s comments, with many frustrated that their club have been unable to spend big and mirror the rest of their Premier League rivals in the transfer market.
