Liverpool slipped to a thumping defeat on Sunday afternoon as they were thrashed 4-1 by Manchester City at Anfield.
The Reds needed to win this. They have been flat of late whilst City have been dominant, and a defeat here would seemingly kill off any hopes of retaining the title.
It was poor again though. Even when Ilkay Gundogan missed a penalty, there was no real spark or zip from the Reds. Even when Mohamed Salah hauled Liverpool level at 1-1, it didn’t spark an improvement.
Gundogan, Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden found the net to give City a huge 4-1 win, leaving Jurgen Klopp desperately seeking answers.
The Reds now sit 10 points adrift of City as their attack continues to falter, and it’s no great surprise that Takumi Minamino’s name came up in conversation.
Minamino was loaned out to Southampton on deadline day having struggled for first-team action at Anfield, but he made an instant impact for the Saints.
When given a chance to start, Minamino scored a superb goal for Southampton, providing the kind of quality Liverpool maybe needed on Sunday.
Martin Tyler brought up Minamino on Sky Sports (90 min), but Jamie Carragher suggested that the honest verdict on Minamino is that he wasn’t offering much in a Liverpool shirt, so he can’t exactly be held up as the answer to the problems now.
“He wasn’t getting many opportunities, that’s obviously down to Jurgen Klopp,” said Carragher. “He hadn’t shown too much to be honest in a Red shirt, we must say that,” he added.
