Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher highlights the significance of David de Gea in the Manchester United team.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been singing the praises of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.

The Spain international has been one of the best players in the Premier League so far this season and a key figure in the United team.

De Gea has kept four clean sheets in 14 Premier League appearances, while having made an average of over two saves per game.

The 24-year-old would probably be hailed as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League had it not been for Chelsea star Thibaut Courtois.

Carragher has given his opinion on the two goalkeepers and told Sky Sports: “He’s (De Gea) been brilliant. He’s arguably been the best goalkeeper in the league so far – I’d probably just edge towards Thibaut Courtois because of his size over De Gea – but in terms of performance no one has done better than him.

“He’s obviously had more to do than Courtois, who has a better defence in front of him and gets more protection, but De Gea has not only been one of the best goalkeepers but maybe one of the players of the season.

“If you think back to how he was when he first came – he’s filled out, got more experience and he’s looking like a great acquisition by Sir Alex Ferguson.”

De Gea will return to action on Monday when Manchester United take on Southampton away from home in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old Courtois will be between the Chelsea posts against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
