Speaking on The Kopite Podcast, Jamie Carragher has been discussing his good friend Steven Gerrard and the next steps in his management career.
Gerrard’s managerial career to date has been a rollercoaster. He did a stellar job at Rangers – guiding them to an undefeated title win, but his time at Aston Villa didn’t quite go to play as he lasted less than 12 months in the role.
Of course, Gerrard has consistently been linked with eventually becoming the manager of Liverpool, but Carragher says he isn’t sure whether he’s actually the right man for the job after his struggles at Villa.
Indeed, Carragher says that he wouldn’t want Gerrard to get the job on sentiment alone above any other manager who is more qualified than him.
Carragher has doubts
The pundit spoke about his former teammates managerial career.
“The Poland one is a strange one, there must be something in it, I’ve not actually spoken to Stevie about it. The only thing I can think is that the two jobs he would love one day would be Liverpool, which will be tough after what’s happened at Villa, and maybe England. How do you get the England job? International experience gives you a better chance than a club job,” Carragher said.
The pundit was then asked if Gerrard becoming Liverpool manager one day was a formality.
“I’m not so sure. I think the Liverpool job should be for who the right man is, it shouldn’t be just because you’ve played for the club. I think if Stevie along with other candidates is vying for that position and he’s on the same level as them, and he’s in contention. The fact he’s played for the club or knows the club would sway that for him,” Carragher said.
“I don’t think any Liverpool fan, and I include Stevie in that, would want him to get the job over someone who is more qualified than him or more successful in his previous jobs, but nothing would please me more than to see Steven Gerrard in the dugout.”
Plenty to prove
Gerrard has a lot to prove before he can truly think about becoming the manager of Liverpool.
Yes, he’s a club legend and that always helps, but let’s be honest, would Liverpool consider any other manager who was sacked by Aston Villa? Probably not.
Gerrard’s managerial CV, quite simply, isn’t up to the standard needed to land a job like this, and he needs to work on gaining experience and honing his craft before considering stepping into the Anfield dugout.
