Tottenham Hotspur sold Luka Modric to Real Madrid back in 2012.
Jamie Carragher has told the Daily Mail that he is disappointed that Tottenham Hotspur were not able to keep hold of Luka Modric for longer.
Modric joined Spurs in 2008 from Dinamo Zagreb, but during his four years at White Hart Lane his performances were so impressive that he attracted a great deal of attention.
In the end, Spurs were unable to fend off the interest for any longer, and the Croatian international moved to Real Madrid in 2012.
Modric has gone on to become regarded as one of the best midfielders in world football during his time with Madrid, and his reputation has continued to increase at Euro 2016.
Modric belted home a brilliant goal in Croatia’s opening match against Turkey, to help his nation on their way to victory.
And Carragher said: “It’s such a shame Tottenham could not hold on to Modric. He would have been a star of the Premier League had he stayed a little longer but, despite firm interest from Chelsea and Manchester United at times, he could not be stopped from going abroad.”
Modric made 159 appearances in total for Spurs, and he scored on 17 occasions.
Since moving to Madrid, Modric has become a key player for the La Liga giants. The 30-year-old has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and now has played 173 times for Los Blancos.
