Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football that Harry Kane lacks the pace and power he once had during the Mauricio Pochettino era at Tottenham. But Carragher compared his passing to that of Kevin De Bruyne.
Kane, 28, took his tally to 20 goals in all competitions this season with a superb brace against Everton on Monday night. Spurs re-established their place in the top-four race with a stunning 5-0 win over Everton in London.
The England skipper made it 13 goals in 10 games against the Toffees – as Spurs went level on points with West Ham, despite boasting two games in hand over the Hammers. They sit three behind fourth-placed Arsenal.
Speaking on Kane after the 5-0 drubbing of Everton, Carragher discussed the new Kane – the one that drops deep and plays as a 10, as well as a 9. He says he lacks the pace and power of the Kane that played under Pochettino.
“Dropping deeper is a natural progression for every striker. He hasn’t got the pace and the power that he used to have under Pochettino. Very rarely, do you see a world-class striker, become a world-class no.10.
“He is as good as passing as Kevin De Bruyne, his striking of the ball and his range of passing is as good as anyone. When you have a player of that quality and nous, Conte should not give him too many instructions.”
Carragher on Kane: Can Tottenham get into the top four this season?
If they are to find themselves in the Champions League spots come May, Tottenham cannot afford any more slip-ups. While they are better placed than West Ham and possibly Manchester United, they are behind Arsenal.
A win over Ralf Rangnick’s side on Saturday evening will be massive towards Spurs pushing their North London rivals – with Spurs and Arsenal still yet to go head to head at Tottenham’s new home. The race is hotting up.
