Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Everton at Goodison Park last night.
Jamie Carragher has told Monday Night Football, which was broadcast on Sky Sports on 19th December, that he believes Ross Barkley’s energy could not be questioned against Liverpool last night – but he found it difficult on the ball.
Barkley was selected to start for the Toffees in the Merseyside derby, but he failed to impress in an attacking sense.
The England international was guilty of giving away possession cheaply on a number of occasions, and although he worked hard for the team, his display drew criticism.
Barkley failed to provide the spark Everton were looking for, as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat against their local rivals.
And Carragher feels that Barkley was lucky to still be on the pitch at full-time, after he lunged into a challenge with Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson and then kicked the ball away to prevent the Reds from taking a free kick.
“I think he covered as much ground as anybody. But it was difficult night for Everton on the ball,” Carragher said, when asked to give his opinion on Barkley’s display. “He should have been sent off twice.”
Everton were undone last night, when Sadio Mane tapped in an injury time winner to ensure that Jurgen Klopp’s side took the local bragging rights.
Everton are now in ninth place in the Premier League table, with their next match coming against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Boxing Day.
