Tottenham Hotspur midfielders Eric Dier and Dele Alli both started for England yesterday, after disappointing seasons for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports, during their live coverage of the Nations League, that Tottenham Hotspur duo Eric Dier and Dele Alli lack technical ability.

Tottenham midfielders Dier and Alli were selected to start for England against Switzerland yesterday, as the Three Lions won the third placed play-off on penalties.

Gareth Southgate’s side were the dominant force in the contest, but there have been question marks over the side’s ability to play possession-based football.

And Carragher said: “You look at that midfield and see Dier and Delph, who are not great on the ball.

“Dele Alli is in there, who if I’m being totally honest, I don’t think is great on the ball. He makes good runs and gets in the box, but he’s lacking that technical element.”

Alli and Dier have not enjoyed their best seasons at Tottenham this past campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino still regards the pair highly, but neither have managed to show their best at White Hart Lane in recent times.

Alli has struggled to score with the same regularity as normal for Spurs, while Dier has suffered with illness and injury.

The Tottenham pair were both members of England’s World Cup squad last year, and it could be that a summer of rest has come at the ideal time for them both.
