Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany waves to fans as he walks off to be substituted after sustaining an injury
Former Liverpool defender and now football pundit, Jamie Carragher says that Vincent Kompany’s signing has been Manchester City’s best transfer business till date.
Kompany joined City from Hamburg in 2008 for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £6m (Manchester Evening News), and has been the club’s first choice defender since.
City have spent hundreds of millions to find a top defender either to partner or replace him, but they haven’t been able to do so.
Carragher in his column for Daily Mail has picked his top 10 best central-defenders in the Premier League. Kompany features in the list, and Carragher has ushered heaps of praise on the Belgian defender.
Citing him as a ‘man mountain’, Carragher says Kompany was undoubtedly the best central defender in the Premier League before injury problems took hold of him in the last three years.
Carragher recalls Kompany’s heroic performance against Manchester United in September 2013 as one of the best he has ever seen from a Premier League defender. That is one hell of a compliment, coming from a player who has played over a decade for Liverpool.
“A man mountain. For three years, before injury problems took hold, I wouldn’t have wanted any other central defender in the world in my team. He had everything: pace, power and aggression, as well as ability on the ball,” wrote Carragher in his column for the Daily Mail.
He produced one of the best performances I’ve seen from a defender when City beat Manchester United in September 2013. City have spent hundreds of millions to find a partner or replacement for him, but haven’t got close.
Kompany cost £6million from Hamburg in 2008. It is the best transfer business that City have ever done.
Pep Guardiola has recently stated that keeping Kompany fit is one of his major challenges next season. If he can stay away from injury, Kompany can play easily for another three to four years at the top level, given his supreme quality.
