Jamie Carragher has said on Sky Sports Super 6 that he does not think that Georginio Wijnaldum will be at Liverpool next season.

The former Liverpool defender, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has praised Wijnaldum for his performances for the Reds this season and for his contribution to the Merseyside club over the years.

The Netherlands international midfielder is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season, and no new deal is in place at the moment.

Wijnaldum has been on the books of the Reds since the summer of 2016 when he joined from Newcastle United for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £25 million, and has won the Premier League and the Champions League.

Carragher said about Wijnaldum on Sky Sports Super 6: “Yes, I think he has been brilliant this season.”

The Englishman added: “He will may be one of the first big players to leave really who has been there through this success of Jurgen Klopp. That’s what will happen over these next few years. That team who have won the league, the Champions League will be broken up, each year maybe one or two might move on, new ones come in, so I think that might be the start of the process.

“Yeah, it will be sad to see him go. He is 29, he obviously wants a new contract, club don’t think he is worth that money in terms of wages. It’s difficult really, you can see both sides of the argument.”

Dilemma for Liverpool

Wijnaldum is 30, and one can understand if Liverpool think that he will not be at his best in the coming years.

However, at the moment, the Dutchman is an important player in manager Jurgen Klopp’s side, and one suspects that the German would love to keep him beyond the summer of 2021.

According to WhoScored, the midfielder has made 20 starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League and has made four starts and one substitute appearance in the Champions League for Liverpool so far this season.
