Jamie Carragher has written in The Telegraph that Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has actually improved defensively this season.
The former Liverpool defender, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports, made the comments in the wake of Alexander-Arnold’s omission from the latest England squad.
The 22-year-old right-back has had a dip in form this season, and like his club Liverpool, is not having the best of times.
Writing in The Telegraph about England head coach Gareth Southgate’s decision on the youngster, Carragher has said that although the right-back has his flaws in defending, he has actually got better in that aspect of his game this season.
Carragher wrote in The Telegraph: “Strange as it sounds for a full-back, defending has never been his strongest asset. He has sometimes struggled in one-on-one defensive or man-marking situations.
“Naturally, when Liverpool’s back four and midfield was destabilised by injuries at the start of this season, that became more apparent.”
The Sky Sports pundit added: “The irony is that over the course of the last few months, the defensive side of Alexander-Arnold’s game has markedly improved.
“Some of his recent performances have been his most solid this season. He could have been named Liverpool’s man-of-the-match against RB Leipzig and Wolves, when the team kept back-to-back clean sheets.”
Getting back to his best
Alexander-Arnold is one of the best young right-backs in Europe, and what he has achieved at Liverpool already simply cannot be ignored.
Not many players can say that they have won the Premier League and the Champions League in their early 20s.
However, there is always room for improvement, and Alexander-Arnold will know that he will have to do his best all the time.
According to WhoScored, Alexander-Arnold has made 25 starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League and has played six times in the Champions League for Liverpool so far this season.
