Newcastle United signed DeAndre Yedlin, after the American spent last season on loan at Sunderland.

Jamie Carragher has told Monday Night Football, which was broadcast on Sky Sports on the 31st October, that Newcastle United have a better right-back than Sunderland at this moment in time.

DeAndre Yedlin spent time on loan at Sunderland last season, and he impressed with his performances at the Stadium of Light.

It was widely expected that Sunderland would make a move to sign Yedlin on a permanent transfer last summer, but they delayed submitting a bid and Newcastle took advantage.

The Magpies brought the American international to St. James’ Park, and Carragher believes that is part of the reason why Sunderland are struggling so badly this season.

The Black Cats have failed to win any of their first 10 Premier League matches, and already sit seven points adrift of safety.

And Carragher said: “When you looked at Sunderland at the end of last season, I looked at Yedlin at full-back. He was a big, strong powerful lad, who could get up and down. They now have Billy Jones. That was better last season.

“Kaboul, who I’m not the biggest fan of, is better than Djilobodji. M’Vila in midfield was better than N’dong.”

Sunderland’s poor start to the campaign leaves them looking likely to face yet another relegation battle this term.

Newcastle, meanwhile, could take their North East rival’s place in the Premier League, as Rafael Benitez’s side are currently top of the Championship and they look to be the stand out team in the second tier.
