Jamie Carragher has said that when Liverpool handed Jordan Henderson a long-term contract till 2025 two years, he was worried and continues to remain uneasy about that decision.

While the £140,000-a-week midfielder received plenty of plaudits for his displays at the World Cup from the likes of Steven Gerrard, Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Ruud Gullit, it is widely agreed that he has been far from his best for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season.

Keeping that in mind, Jamie Carragher has raised his concerns about Liverpool tying Jordan Henderson down to 4-year contract, as the decision is starting to age like milk.

It seems as if the England international’s ability to cover ground has undergone a massive decline, while his once-pinpoint passing has almost become a thing of the past for the Reds.

Now, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher seems to be confused about the decision to give Jordan Henderson a new contract in 2021, writing in his Telegraph column, “Some contract renewals have also become contentious. Everyone was thrilled when [Jurgen] Klopp and [Mohamed] Salah signed new deals last year. But rewind to the summer of 2021 and Liverpool rewarded 31-year-old captain Jordan Henderson with a 4-year deal.”

He continued, “Henderson has given Liverpool sterling service, but the length of that contract was a surprise, contradicting FSG’s policies on players in their 30s. There was an obvious change of tack after Klopp personally intervened following reports that Henderson might leave.”

Carragher continued about the decision from Liverpool to give Henderson a long-term contract by stating, “Within 24 hours of an agreement, [former] sporting director Michael Edwards was reported as considering his future, and has since left. The timing was probably coincidental, but there were strong suggestions, not contradicted that there were internal disagreements about the length and value of Henderson’s extension.”

“That worried me at the time and has worried me more when hearing the echoes whenever Klopp speaks about the future of Roberto Firmino and James Milner.”

Ultimately, it’s hard to disagree with Jamie Carragher and it is decisions such as handing an ageing Jordan Henderson a new contract that highlights the lack of foresight at Liverpool.
