Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that Joe Hart will be a good signing for Liverpool.
England’s Joe Hart during training
Liverpool legend and now football pundit, Jamie Carragher says that Joe Hart would be a great signing for the Reds.
The former Liverpool defender believes that Jurgen Klopp needs to bring in a new goalkeeper in the summer if the Reds are aiming to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
Carragher says that Klopp’s target must be to bring Hart to Anfield.
“For me, Joe Hart ticks all the boxes as the kind of keeper Liverpool need. At the moment, Jurgen Klopp has Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius,” said Carragher, as quoted by The Mirror.
“One is a very good Premier League keeper and the other might develop into a top player. But are they part of the elite?
“I don’t think so – but Hart definitely is. Joe has won titles, he’s played in the Champions League, and has the mentality to excel behind a top team.
“He’s also developed great concentration levels at City and, despite what Pep Guardiola believes, I think he is also decent with his feet. It isn’t often that the opportunity arises to buy a proven, top-class goalkeeper from a rival, but Hart fits the bill.”
Hart’s situation
The 29-year-old keeper has impressed at Torino on loan, but has not done enough to prolong his career with Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola has made his decision, and will let Hart leave the club and even join a rival team if their £20m asking price (The Times) is met.
Will Hart be a good signing for Liverpool?
Hart, two times Premier League winner with City, was left out of the squad because he didn’t fit in with his manager’s tactics. Guardiola is a great manager with a near-unparalleled success around Europe. It is safe to assume that he (and his coaching staff) knows a thing or two about what skill set a player needs. If he didn’t feel that Hart was good enough for City, then why for Liverpool?
His distribution is a major sticking point. Another major flaw in his game is his inability to stop a ball low to his left. Throughout his career, this one area of his game has been exploited time and again.
He is fast approaching 30, and it is highly unlikely that he will adjust his technique at any point. With age, a goalkeeper gets better at positioning, decision making and other aspects but it is hard to make an adjustment to one’s technique so easily.
Therefore, doubts remain whether he can represent Liverpool for a long period of time. Given his high transfer value, Liverpool should look elsewhere for a successor to Mignolet, if that is their primary objective.
