West Bromwich Albion have signed up Daniel Sturridge from Liverpool on loan until the end of the season.

Pundits Jamie Carragher (L) and Gary Neville laugh prior to the Premier League match between West Ham United and Leicester City at London Stadium on November 24, 2017 in London, England.

Gary Neville has told The Debate, which was broadcast on Sky Sports on 2nd February, that he believes Liverpool shouldn’t have let Daniel Sturridge leave to join West Bromwich Albion.

Sturridge has signed for the Baggies on loan for the remainder of the campaign, after Liverpool deemed him to be surplus to requirements.

The England international has spent most this season on the substitutes’ bench, with Jurgen Klopp often overlooking him.

But Neville feels that West Brom have done well to get hold of Sturridge, as he could still have been of use to Liverpool over the second half of the campaign.

Neville said: “I look at Sturridge and people say he’s not playing for Liverpool, it’s not a big loss.

“If Firmino gets injured for two months, Liverpool are in the Champions League and trying to get to top four… [all they’ve got is] Danny Ings and Solanke. It just seems like a crazy one to me, it’s a massive risk.”

Jamie Carragher was of a differing opinion though, and he suggested that West Brom have not got Sturridge at his prime.

Carragher feels as if the Liverpool forward’s quality has diminished in recent years, and he has suggested that the former Chelsea man was no longer needed at Anfield.

“I don’t think it’s a problem letting Sturridge go,” the Reds legend said.

“I think he was falling down the pecking order behind the pecking order. But is Solanke and Ings good enough? No. Liverpool are short there, but that’s not because of Sturridge.

“We keep looking at Sturridge and we always go back to the season when Liverpool nearly won the league. That’s not the Sturridge of today. West Brom are bottom of the league, and that’s where he’s ended up.”

Sturridge made his West Brom debut in midweek, as Alan Pardew’s side were beaten 3-0 by City.

Sturridge nearly scored during the contest, but skewed his shot wide, after going round Ederson in the City goal.
