Jamie Carragher has reacted to claims that Bayern Munich could be looking to bring in Liverpool’s managerial target, Xabi Alonso.
Ahead of the summer, there seems to be some big managerial jobs available in Europe, with Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona all searching for new faces for their dugout.
The soon-to-be departures of Jurgen Klopp and Xavi Hernandez were already known, but on Wednesday, Bayern Munich announced that the under-fire Thomas Tuchel will also leave at the end of the campaign.
Sources have told HITC Football that Bayern are already making moves to try and bring Bayer Leverkusen’s high-flying coach to Munich.
When Jamie Carragher was asked if this is bad news for Liverpool, he agreed and added ‘Yes, if there are other people in for his signature’, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (21/02/24 at 7:05 pm).
The Liverpool legend was even teased by Micah Richards to ‘text’ his old teammate and persuade him to make the switch to Anfield.
The former Spanish midfielder is a legendary figure on Merseyside and was part of the team that won the Champions League on that famous night in Istanbul in 2005.
Jamie Carragher shared that Xabi Alonso is ‘still seeing my stories on Instagram’ and joked that he will try to talk to him after the March internationals.
Xabi Alonso – Bayern Munich or Liverpool?
On talk of Alonso now going to Bayern and it being bad news for Liverpool: “Yes if there are other people in for his signature.
“It will be interesting. Who knows if he is going to leave Leverkusen? If he goes on to do what we think and wins the title there, then it will be difficult to stay. He will have some great offers and fingers crossed it’s my Liverpool. I can make a case for that.
Micah Richards then tells Carragher to ‘text’ Alonso: “He has got his focus on Leverkusen, at the moment. He is still seeing my stories on Instagram. He is checking in on me. No, no (he hasn’t replied). We will get to the March international break and I will see what’s going on.”

Pressure on Liverpool
This is where Liverpool have to make their move and hope that Alonso is willing to discuss matters now.
A number of weeks ago, it felt like the Reds had a free swing at him and the right coach was going to land on their doorstep after such a legendary figure was going to leave.
But if they don’t manage to secure Alonso’s talents, then it will deflate the fans because there isn’t somebody else who stands out.
Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has been mentioned, but can he make that step up?
Whilst Ange Postecoglou of Tottenham has also been talked about. He has the style, man-management and trophies, from his time at Celtic, to show for it.
