The Rangers captain doesn’t want his team’s focus to be taken off a potential title battle with Celtic this season.

Rangers captain James Tavernier wants his teammates to stay focused this season by removing distractions such as social media from their lives, The Scottish Sun report.

The Gers are ramping up to be competitive in the Scottish Premiership, opening their league campaign away to Kilmarnock on Sunday at Rugby Park.

Finishing nine points behind Celtic last term, Tavernier and the rest of Steven Gerrard’s side will be hoping to get a lot closer this time around.

In order to do that, the Gers skipper feels his team must remain focused and remove any unhelpful distractions from their lives.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Tavernier said: “You try and stay out of the limelight as much as you can. You can tell them to stay off social media.

“A lot of things can be said on there and you don’t want to put your head in a different place. You want to stay focused on the job in hand.

“It will be a team effort. We want to achieve the same things and we can’t get caught up in anything else.”

Social media outlets like Twitter and Instagram can be a great way for players to reach out and keep in touch with supporters, but as Tavernier notes, they certainly have their pitfalls.

Fans of all teams can be rather reactionary in the wake of defeats or even draws and isolating themselves from that kind of criticism could be key for players maintaining confidence and focus on the tasks at hand.

No player wants to hit the headlines for the wrong reasons either, so heeding Tavernier’s advice by staying out of the limelight would also be a sound move.

Maintaining a bubble around the dressing room is certainly a viable strategy.

Whether Rangers have the quality to maintain a serious title challenge or not remains to be seen, but the Gers captain clearly feels that if they take small actions like this it’ll bring them closer than they’ve been in recent years.
