James Tavernier has told Wednesday’s press conference – as per the Rangers Twitter account – that it is “great news” Connor Goldson is back in training ahead of Thursday’s return to Ibrox, in what is Michael Beale’s first game in charge.

Goldson, 29, picked up an injury during the 7-1 loss to Liverpool. Going off at half-time with the scoreline reading 1-1, his exit changed the game – Liverpool scoring six goals in the second 45. He has been sidelined since at Ibrox.

Indeed, it is the Englishman’s first really meaningful spell on the sidelines ever since moving to Rangers in the summer of 2018. Beale’s first summer, at Rangers. Indeed, he has gone on to play 240 times for the club in all competitions.

An enormous number, given it has only been four and a half years since his move north of the border. Since the injury, he has missed 10 games in all competitions but ahead of Hibernian, he is back in training. It has delighted Tavernier.

“Connor (Goldson) is a massive character for the squad on the pitch and around the building. He is a big voice and he leads by example. It is great news for him to be back in training,” Tavernier said, as quoted on the Rangers Twitter.

Tavernier: Great news that Goldson is back in Rangers training

Without Goldson, Rangers have been poor. Three defeats have followed in the 10 games he has missed, as well as draws to St. Mirren and Livingston. In the 10 games, Rangers have conceded 12 goals, keeping only two clean sheets.

Beale knows Goldson well having been part of the management staff that brought him north of the border. Now, he is back and that will come as an enormous boost to Beale, who will be desperate to get off to a winning start as manager.
