Rangers captain James Tavernier has paid tribute to Ibrox colossus Connor Goldson after the Gers’ title success last season – insisting the central defender has been “pivotal” for Steven Gerrard’s side.
Goldson played every minute of every game last season as the Gers romped to their first title in a decade and Tavernier confessed he’s “loved it from the first moment” Goldson arrived at Ibrox having played alongside him at Shrewsbury Town previously.
With Rangers preparing for their return to the Champions League after a decade-long absence, the Ibrox skipper can’t wait to play in Europe’s premier club competition beside Goldson.
“I’ve loved it from the first moment Connor came in. I was with him at Shrewsbury so I knew him before he came here and we gelled straight away,” Tavernier told Rangers’ ‘Champions’ magazine.
“If it wasn’t for Connor next to me we wouldn’t have probably got the amount of success we have had this season.
“He has been such a pivotal part in that success and he leads by example day in day out.
“I’m really proud of what he has done and what he has achieved. I just can’t wait to play in the Champions League next season with him.”
Rangers now need to secure Goldson’s Ibrox future
After such an impressive season, Rangers fans are desperate to see the Gers tie Goldson down to a longer contract.
The former Brighton stopper is out of contract next summer and there’s a real risk he could move on for free soon.
Hopefully, hearing UEFA’s version of Zadok The Priest blaring around Ibrox will help convince him his future lies in Glasgow.
