James Tavernier has applauded the work done on the training ground by new Rangers first-team coach Tom Culshaw in an interview with the club’s website, after The Gers’ progressed into the third round of Europa League qualifying.

Rangers drew 1-1 on the night with Croatian outfit NK Osijek, winning 2-1 on aggregate at Ibrox as Steven Gerrard takes his side within two rounds of the Europa League group stage.

Nikola Katic gave Rangers the lead in the second half with his first goal for the club from a corner, after good work from Alfredo Morelos to nod the ball back into the six-yard box.

A late goal from Osijek finally ended Allan McGregor’s run without conceding, as he made a number of saves before a late shot squeezed through his legs. Captain Tavernier chose to praise Culshaw, whose work helped lead to Katic’s goal.

“Tom Culshaw has been getting his book out on his set pieces but we have got really aggressive boys in the box and it showed today,” Tavernier said.

“You have seen what Niko and Connor do at the back, defending the goal kicks and then you can see what Niko can do in the box tonight and in the Wigan game.

“They are really aggressive and we are delighted to have those boys who can attack the ball when we put deliveries in.”

Rangers now face Slovenian giants Maribor in the third qualifying round, after they finally saw off the challenge of Georgian side Chihkhura Sachkhere with a 2-0 second-leg win.

The Gers have history with Maribor, losing in the Europa League play-off stage back in 2011 3-2 on aggregate. Now, they must exact revenge on Maribor to book their place in the play-off stage ahead of the group stages.

But Gerrard’s focus will be Sunday’s opening Scottish Premiership clash against Aberdeen at Pittodrie, with the former Liverpool and England captain desperate to get off to a good start against a side that finished second last term.
