According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, Liverpool have not made any contact for Lille central defender Sven Botman.

The well-known and well-respected journalist has reported in The Athletic (January 3) that there has been no contract from Liverpool with Botman’s representatives regarding a potential move in the January transfer window.

The report has claimed that the defending Premier League champions do not plan to sign the Netherlands Under-20 international central defender this month.

Contradictory reports

The Athletic’s report contradicts the recent rumours and speculation regarding Liverpool and Botman.

FootMercato reported in December that Liverpool first made contract for the 20-year-old defender in November (click here to read more).

Well-known journalist Duncan Castles claimed last week on The Transfer Window Podcast that the Reds have opened talks with Botman’s agent.

Do Liverpool need a centre-back?

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term injury absentees, while Joel Matip is on the sidelines at the moment.

Defensive midfielder Fabinho is playing as a centre-back, and Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips are young and do not have a lot of experience.

While signing a defender for the second half of the season would be prudent, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could have too many players for the position once Van Dijk and Gomez are back from injury.
