James Milner has stated that Leeds United’s relegation in 2004 was ‘one of the worst moments’ in his career, as he described the supporters as ‘incredible’.

Premier League winner Milner started his career at Elland Road as a teenager, but following their relegation, he would go on to achieve great things at many top-quality clubs in England’s top-flight.

Leeds have not been back since that day in 2004, but in recent seasons, it seems as though they may well be edging closer to a return to the promised land.

Speaking to BT Sport, Milner opened up about that heartbreaking day when his boyhood club went down, as he praised their special fans.

On Leeds getting relegated: “It was horrible,” Milner told BT Sport. “It was probably one of the worst moments of my career. The team that you have been supporting all your life and the first team you played for.

“There was a lot of stuff going on, at the time. Off-field problems and financial problems. As a young player, you had to grow up quick. I think I was protected well by the club and the senior players.

“The support is incredible. It’s a special club. I think I am biased but I think most people are going to agree with me and it’s a club that definitely belongs in the Premier League.”

Marcelo Bielsa has worked wonders since he walked through the doors of Elland Road last season, as many believe he can be the manager to guide them back to the Premier League.

Whilst Milner is coming towards the end of his career, he is still producing the goods on a regular basis for Liverpool, and could there be the possibility that he ends his career at Leeds?

If the Whites can earn promotion then it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Milner return, but until then, he will watch on from afar and home the current crop of players can do the job this season.
