Since replacing Unai Emery, Mikel Arteta hasn’t done too much wrong at the Emirates Stadium.
The Spaniard has helped develop Bukayo Saka into a seriously good footballer, while he’s also secured the FA Cup and Community Shield.
However, Arteta seems to be missing a trick in one area.
His use of Calum Chambers exclusively as a right-back makes sense, but the 39-year-old is yet to use the £16 million man in a position where he arguably enjoyed the best season of his career.
Back in the 2018/19 campaign, the 26-year-old was on loan at Fulham, where he bossed things at Craven Cottage.
Chambers was named as the club’s Player of the Season for his efforts.
However, he wasn’t playing at right-back – he spent the season as a centre-midfielder.
Fulham’s own announcement of his award even stated that things started to go well for him as soon as he was moved into midfield.
Transfermarkt shows that Arteta has never actually used Chambers anywhere other than right-back, so he’s missing a trick by not giving the ex-Southampton man a chance in midfield.
Additionally, this switch could actually save the Englishman’s Arsenal career, should the Gunners sign a new right-back this summer.
According to the Mirror, Arsenal are eyeing Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey, while Mundo Deportivo believe Emerson Royal is also on their list.
Should either of them arrive, you’d expect them to start, and push others down the pecking order.
In that respect, Chambers may find his game-time limited, but not if Arteta starts to use him as a midfielder as well.
Just like Jürgen Klopp surely loves having James Milner, Arteta will adore Chambers if he proves himself capable of playing in midfield as well as at centre-back and right-back.
The Gunners boss just needs to find a moment to let him show what he can do.
If he impresses in the middle, it might just save his Arsenal career.
