James McFadden has told Open Goal that there is “no chance” Rangers sign Scotland striker Lawrence Shankland this month – even if the Ibrox club table an offer of £3million to land the in-form goal machine in the coming weeks.
Shankland, 27, is in the form of his life after returning to Scotland with Hearts after a tricky spell in Austrian football. Already, the Scotland star has 18 goals in 28 games in all competitions – scoring 15 of his 18 goals in 18 League games.
Little surprise interest is emerging. Barry Ferguson has been quoted by The Record as saying he is sure Rangers are looking at Shankland: “He’s one that I’m sure Rangers will be keeping an eye on because goalscorers are hard to find”.
Asked if Rangers could sign Shankland from Hearts in the coming weeks, McFadden responded. He says there is no chance Hearts sell Shankland – who has a contract at Tynecastle until 2025. Even, if a £3million offer was tabled.
“They’re [Rangers] not getting Shankland. Hearts won’t sell Shankland. No chance. How much do you think? I don’t think [Hearts would sell Shankland for £3m],” McFadden said, during Open Goal’s Right in the Coupon programme.

Rangers need a striker. Alfredo Morelos continues to show inconsistent form and fitness questions remain. He is out of contract at the end of the season. Antonio Colak has been injured, and there are doubts if he suits Michael Beale.
Beale himself has said that he would like to play with two strikers at times. Kemar Roofe is back from injury, but his injury past will be a concern for Rangers if they have to rely on Roofe. They need another. Shankland would be ideal.
But McFadden is probably right. With Hearts looking good for a third-place finish and another chance to qualify for Europe and the Conference League again, Hearts are under no pressure to sell. Shankland is a lifelong Rangers fan.
