Allan McGregor will be focusing on Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers from here on in after announcing his retirement from international football.
James McFadden has admitted to BBC Sportsound that he is ‘very disappointed’ by Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor’s decision to announce his retirement from Scotland.
McGregor has been in blinding form for Rangers since returning to Ibrox last summer.
But the 37-year-old announced on Monday that he is stepping away from the international fold to save himself for the Gers next season.
McGregor, who has played over 50 games for Steven Gerrard’s side this season, was Alex McLeish’s number one and started all four of the Scots’ competitive games in the final quarter of 2018.
Despite being disappointed with the veteran’s decision, McFadden, McLeish’s assistant, says that he and the manager respect the decision.
He told BBC Sportsound: “We are very disappointed to lose a top class goalkeeper but understand his decision.
“The manager spoke to him and Allan made it clear that it’s to do with his body and he wants to make sure he is getting a rest during international breaks to allow to play his club football and he is well within his rights to do that.”
“Obviously we are disappointed and the manager tried to get him to change his decision but his mind had been made up.”
This is great news for Rangers fans, who will now get even more out of him during the coming years. Despite being 37, McGregor clearly has no plans on hanging up his boots – or gloves – and when you’re in the form he’s been in, there’s no need to.
