Rangers dropped more points at the weekend when they were held to a goalless draw by St Johnstone.
James McFadden has clearly stated that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has had ‘a problem’ in defence this season following their goalless draw against St Johnstone at the weekend.
The Gers produced a lacklustre display in front of their own supporters, with the away side possibly thinking they could have nicked all three points had they been more clinical in some of the chances they created.
It was a damaging defeat for Rangers, who have now fallen further behind Premiership leaders Celtic in the table, who scored a last-minute winner to beat Kilmarnock on Sunday to go eight points clear.
Nonetheless, Sky pundit McFadden stated that goalkeeper West Foderingham is to the only one who is blameless for the club’s troublesome defence.
“Bar the performance of Wes Foderingham, they were very lucky to come away with a draw,” McFadden told Sky Sports Football on 17/02/2019. “I think when they don’t have Morelos their defence is all over the place.
“It’s been a problem for Rangers this season that their defence hasn’t been good enough. When they don’t have Morelos they struggle to score goals.”
For their second match in a row, Gerrard’s side failed to score following their draw at Kilmarnock a fortnight ago in the Scottish Cup fifth round.
Despite the dropped points and poor performances in recent weeks, Gerrard and his so-called under-fire defence have secured four clean sheets in their last seven matches in all competitions.
Over the course of the season, they have conceded 20 goals from their 26 league matches – only leaders Celtic have conceded fewer.
Nonetheless, the second-placed side are in league action next Sunday when they travel to Hamilton, but before that, they host Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup on Wednesday.
