James Maddison has told reporters via Football Daily that fans are justified in having high expectations from England at the upcoming World Cup, such as going all the way.
Several fans see no reason not to be optimistic on paper
While Brazil and Argentina enter football’s grandest stage as the two outright favourites, a whole host of fans and pundits have questioned why England should not be in high spirits ahead of the tournament.
Despite things going awry in the Nations League games, the Three Lions have reached a semi-final followed by a final in the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 successively.
Furthermore, Gareth Southgate is blessed with a plethora of superstar names at his disposal, such as Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham to name a few.
While some may argue that a handful of other nations possess superior squads as a whole, the English have a brilliant ensemble as well heading into the competition.
Maddison sides with fans that expect the Three Lions to win the World Cup
Instead of playing down fans’ expectations from England to win the tournament for the second time in their history, James Maddison feels that supporters have every right to expect the very best from their national side.

“You should always have the highest expectations. I think there’s probably 8 or 9 nations where the group of fans will be expecting their team to win and that’s just how football works”, he told reporters via Football Daily.
Maddison continued, “Fans always see best for the team that they’re supporting and the last two major tournaments have been absolutely brilliant, the boys [England players], they have.“
“Semi-final [2018 World Cup] and then a final [Euro 2020], there’s only that one step further that you can go and that’s winning it.”
James Maddison’s optimistic mindset heading into the World Cup is exactly what England fans wish to hear from the players.
