Dele Alli was a bargain signing for Tottenham a couple of years ago, but they must pay more for the next top English talent.

Mauricio Pochettino is assembling an exciting young – largely British – squad at Tottenham Hotspur as they look to build for the future.

And James Maddison would be a great addition to that if Spurs were able to do a deal with Norwich City.

The Mirror claims Norwich would be looking for £30million and that seems a huge fee when compared with some of the other transfers Tottenham have done, but it should not put them off.

Indeed that price tag just goes to show what a good deal they got when Dele Alli was snapped up for seven figures.

Having got Alli on the cheap, seen Harry Kane and Harry Winks come through the academy and now secured regular Champions League football, though, they can afford to splash out.

Maddison may not be a player that will immediately worry a Real Madrid or a Bayern Munich, but he fits with what Tottenham want and need, and Pochettino would surely improve him.

Spurs will understand that they cannot do everything on the cheap and there’s little point getting such a great deal with Alli if they do not take advantage by bringing in more quality players.

Maddison is a future England star and, after 14 Championship goals, his signing would represent a big coup.
