Should Brendan Rodgers give James Forrest the responsibility of leading Celtic’s forward line in Trondheim?
Celtic return to the Champions League stage on Wednesday as they travel to Rosenborg with the hope of moving into the playoff phase of the competition.
But they might, for the second week running, have to face the Norwegian side without a recognised striker, if Leigh Griffiths does not shrug off his injury in time.
Tom Rogic, a central midfielder, was given that role for the first leg at Parkhead, in which the Bhoys failed to break down Rosenborg in a 0-0 draw, but could Brendan Rodgers turn to James Forrest this time if Griffiths remains sidelined?
The 26-year-old was lauded as “exceptional” by Rodgers for his performance in a forward role during Celtic’s 5-0 demolition of Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Forrest was not among the goals, but he certainly looked a better fit for a false nine role than Rogic did and although it was only a friendly, against Sunderland no less, the Northern Irishman might well be tempted to play him there again in Trondheim.
Of course, if Griffiths is fit then it’s not even a debate as to who the better option is up front, but Forrest looks like he has better tools for the job than anybody else in the squad.
