Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is determined to bring the defender to Ibrox, according to reports.

In comments reported by the Daily Record, Connor Goldson’s former teammate James Collins has suggested that the centre-back has asked him about a potential Rangers move while the striker also predicted that Goldson would be keen to make the switch to Ibrox this summer.

The Record reports that Goldson is Steven Gerrard’s top target as he prepares for his first season with the Gers, and talks over a potential move to the Scottish Premiership have been held with the defender’s current club Brighton.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

And Collins – who played alongside the 25-year-old at Shrewsbury – explained that Goldson has been asking him about a move north of the border after his spell with Hibernian a few years ago, while he also suggested that he would expect the Liverpool-supporting ace to be extremely keen on making the move to Ibrox.

“When the speculation about Rangers began, he asked me about a move to Scotland and I couldn’t recommend the club highly enough,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record. “I told him I thought he could do very well there. Connor would be signing for a massive club if he joined and I believe he can do well. Everyone who knows anything about football knows Rangers and Celtic are far superior to most clubs in Scotland.

“Connor was also a massive Liverpool fan growing up and Steven Gerrard in particular was one of his heroes. So if someone like Gerrard comes knocking on your door and is desperate to sign you then it will turn your head and you will certainly want to have a look at what is on offer. He is a Brighton player for now but if the chance comes for Connor to go to Rangers then I am sure he would jump at it.”

It would certainly be a superb way for Rangers to kick off the summer if they could get Goldson to follow the likes of Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield into the club before Gerrard has barely got to work with his new side.

Defence is an area that Rangers must strengthen this summer, having seen two of their best-performing centre-backs from this past season leave over the last six months. The remaining options in the middle have hardly covered themselves in glory.

Goldson has not played as much as he would have liked this past season, but he was the understudy to one of the most impressive and consistent partnerships in the Premier League this year. And it appears that he would relish the opportunity to establish himself at the highest level judging by Collins’ comments.
