James Collins & Danny Gabbidon laud Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies for his assist for Wales

Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies started back-to-back Euro 2020 qualifiers for Wales over the international break, as he will now head back to club duty where he will be hoping to start ahead of Danny Rose.

Sky Sports pundit duo James Collins and Danny Gabbidon have lauded Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies for his ‘tremendous’ assist during Wales’ 1-1 draw against Croatia on Sunday evening.

Left-back Davies started back-to-back encounters for his country during their Euro 2020 qualifiers, with the Spurs man setting up Gareth Bale for Wales’ equaliser last night.

In previous games, Neil Taylor has started ahead of him, but during these past two games over the international break – against Slovakia and Croatia, he has now won his place back in the starting XI.

Speaking to Sky Sports Football (13/10/2019 at 9:00 pm), ex-Wales internationals Collins and Gabbidon praised the part Davies played in Bale’s equalising goal.

“Ben Davies has done tremendously well,” Collins told Sky Sports. “He’s slightly lucky for his tackle from behind, but I would say so [it’s a foul before he provides the assist]. And then the two touches from Gareth Bale are incredible.

Gabbidon then added: “He [Davies] has tried to make something happen. It was difficult for Wales in that first half because they were so deep. But Ben just gets on the ball and says ‘look, I am going to try and make something happen’. For me, that’s a foul in the build to the goal – Ben Davies, as we said, great driving run, great tenacity and a good ball into Gareth Bale.”

Before the international break, Davies started Spurs’ 3-0 defeat to Brighton, but for most games this season, Danny Rose has been ahead of him in the pecking order.

Davies will be hoping that Rose’s bad form, his recent outing for Wales, and the fact that he started Spurs last match will mean he keeps his place in the starting XI.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side need some much-needed three points when club football returns at the weekend, and they will be hoping to get that against winless Watford.
