Aston Villa defender James Bree could be pushed further down the pecking order.

Aston Villa are set to be in the market for defensive reinforcements during the January transfer window, but many would expect a centre back to arrive.

Villa have just two recognised centre backs at their disposal in Axel Tuazebe and James Chester, meaning adding depth in that position is imperative next month.

However, reports are now linking with Villa with a different defensive addition, as The Age in Australia claim Dean Smith’s side want Josh Risdon of Western Sydney Wanderers.

Risdon, 26, has starred in Australia with Perth Glory and now Western Sydney Wanderers, whilst he has also picked up 13 caps for Australia having impressed in recent years.

If Risdon signs, then Villa will have another right back at their disposal, adding to Alan Hutton, Ahmed Elmohamady and James Bree – and the latter should be seeking a temporary exit if it happens.

Bree, 20, was snapped up by Steve Bruce in January 2017 having impressed with Barnsley, but he has made just 18 appearances for the club in nearly two years at Villa Park.

Injuries and inexperience have factored into that, but if Bree is pushed down the pecking order by a deal for Risdon, then he should be considering a loan move away from Villa Park.

It’s too early to give up on Bree at Villa completely, especially with Hutton and Elmohamady in their 30’s, but a loan move until the end of the season could be great for all parties, allowing Bree to develop away from Villa Park before returning – but only if Smith really is attempting to secure Risdon.
