Jameis Winston explains why he joined Japanese fans after World Cup draw
Winston was working as a FOX Sports correspondent during the tournament when he joined Japanese supporters after the match.
He said the tradition reflected values that went far beyond football.
“Well, I believe gratitude is the key to abundance. Just understanding the tradition of the Japanese fans that no trash is left behind. They take intention in cleaning up after themselves because they respect the venue, they respect FIFA, they respect the game of football itself.”
He added that the practice is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and community values.
“So they believe and understand the importance of what their community believes. They’ve been practicing this since they were very little children.”
One detail particularly impressed Winston during the cleanup effort
Winston also highlighted the attention to detail shown by the supporters as they cleaned the stadium.
He noted how carefully fans sorted different materials after collecting rubbish.
“So, picking up their trash, taking it out and throwing it away, and even the specifics of the details, focus on the little things. They separate the paper and plastic from the aluminum. That detail and respect for the game is something that I love.”
Japanese supporters have become well known for remaining behind after matches to clean stadiums, a tradition that has attracted worldwide attention at multiple World Cups.
