Jamaal Lascelles has intimated to The Chronicle that he does not intend on leaving Newcastle United this summer.
The England centre-back enjoyed a brilliant 2017-18 campaign with the Magpies, prompting speculation about his future.
According to The Sun, Everton were considering a £30 million bid for the towering defender last month, with Tottenham Hotspur also rumoured to be interested.
However, the 24-year-old has categorically denied that he or any of his team-mates would use Newcastle as a stepping stone toward somewhere else, stressing that Rafael Benitez has assembled a “loyal” bunch.
He told The Chronicle: “We play for one another. We play for the badge. We play for the fans and the staff and, of course, for our families.
“There’s not one player here that would try to just play here to try and get a move or for more or whatever. It’s not about that. We’re loyal.
“We’re a hard-working, young group of players, and it’s going to stay that way.”
Newcastle fans could and should love what their captain has had to say. Not only has he suggested that he is going nowhere, but Lascelles paints a pretty picture of the unity within the Magpies’ squad – and what a difference it is compared to 2016.
This time two years ago, Benitez, who had already lost Andros Townsend, was about to also lose Georginio Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko, and it must be refreshing for fans of the St James’s Park side to hear that this generation is much more committed to the club than past players.
