The victory ensured Newcastle moved back to the top of the Championship, ahead of Brighton by a point, who won the previous evening.

The match was fairly even in terms of possession with Newcastle having 53 per cent, and 11 shots to Wigan’s nine.
It was ultimately two moments of quality which won it for Newcastle, with Atsu scoring just 10 minutes after coming off the bench.
The result piles the pressure on Wigan, who remain in the relegation zone in 23rd place, four points from safety, slipping to their third successive defeat.
With third placed Reading losing at Leeds in midweek, Newcastle are now nine points above dropping out of the automatic promotion spots.
