Jamaal Lascelles has singled out Newcastle United team-mates Mo Diame and Jonjo Shelvey for praise.

Jamaal Lascelles has told The Chronicle that Newcastle United duo Jonjo Shelvey and Mo Diame deserve a lot of credit for the Magpies’ run of form.

Rafael Benitez’s side beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 to move seven points clear of the relegation zone on Saturday.

It was Newcastle’s third win in five Premier League games, including a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at St James’s Park in February.

Shelvey and Diame both earned rave reviews for their performances in that game and both have been consistently superb for the North-East outfit since then.

Lascelles has been getting plenty of credit for Newcastle’s resurgence, but the 24-year-old defender claims that his two team-mates are effectively ‘running the show’ for United these days.

“Then the two central-midfielders have really stepped up. Jonjo and Mo are pretty much running the games for us now,” he told The Chronicle.

Whatever about Shelvey, but it was nigh-on impossible to imagine Lascelles or any Newcastle player singling Diame out for credit during the first half of the season.

The former Hull City man was dreadful for much of the campaign until around when January, when he started performing like the player who Benitez spent £4.5 million on nearly two years ago (Sky Sports).

If the Magpies stay up, which is looking increasingly possible, then the Senegal midfielder can certainly claim to have played a big role in it.
