Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles has explained to The Chronicle why winning against Derby County at the weekend was special for him.

The Magpies maintained their recent run of good form in the Championship with a 2-0 victory over Derby away from home on Saturday evening.

Yoan Gouffran put Newcastle in the lead at the iPro Stadium after 20 minutes, and DeAndre Yedlin made it 2-0 in the first minute of injury time.

Lascelles started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes, and the 22-year-old has explained why it was special for him to win against the Rams.

The English youngster is a former Nottingham Forest player, and he has said that it is always nice to win at Derby.

The talented and promising young defender joined Newcastle from Forest in the summer of 2014 and spent the 2014-15 campaign on loan at the City Ground.

“Being at Nottingham Forest when I was younger, it’s always nice to come to Derby and get the three points,” Lascelles told The Chronicle.

“Credit to the boys, they were fantastic, and we go again on Tuesday. I’ve got loads of friends and family here. I only lived five minutes around the corner.”

Newcastle are second in the Championship table at the moment with 12 points from six matches. Rafael Benitez’s side are currently four points behind leaders Huddersfield Town.

The Magpies will return to action on Tuesday evening when they take on Queens Park Rangers away from home at Loftus Road in the Championship.
