Newcastle had been the dominant side in the first half, and earned their lead, when Tommy Elphick diverted a cross into his own net.
Dwight Gayle and Mohamed Diame then had glorious chances to extend Newcastle’s lead, but both miscued when well placed.
And the Magpies were made to pay for their profligacy, when Villa started to put pressure on at the end of the match.
Villa threw everything at Rafael Benitez’s side in the second half, and they got their reward when Aaron Tshibola headed in a corner in the closing minutes.
Newcastle will have the opportunity to pick themselves up from this disappointment on Tuesday night, when they take on top of the table Norwich City.
