Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles has told The Shields Gazette that he and his teammates can handle the pressure of playing against Leeds United this weekend.

The Magpies will take on Leeds away from home at Elland Road in the Championship on Sunday afternoon.

Elland Road will be packed as the game has been sold out, and the Whites are in good form at the moment.

Garry Monk’s side are currently sixth in the Championship table and are genuine playoff contenders.

Newcastle, who got relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, are at the top of the standings at the moment with 37 points from 16 matches.

Lascelles, who is 23 years of age and is a star player for the Magpies, believes that he and his teammates will be able to handle the pressure of playing against Leeds at Elland Road.

“The fans are quite lively down there,” Lascelles told The Shields Gazette when asked about the likely atmosphere at Elland Road. “But this is our job, this is what we do. We can handle the pressure.

“We play in front of 52,000 every other weekend, so that is a massive stage – but we are looking forward to it.”

“Leeds are a good team – they have always been up there in the Championship – but, like I’ve said before, we don’t really look at other teams too much,” added the 23-year-old.

“I am confident that whoever we play we can put up a good show. So we are just going to play in the right way, a professional manner, take it to them on Sunday.”

It will not be easy for Newcastle to win against Leeds, and a draw at Elland Road will not be a bad result.

The Magpies have a better team than the West Yorkshire outfit have, but playing at home will give Monk’s side an advantage.
