Both Mohamed Diame and Aleksandar Mitrovic netted braces during the contest, while Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez also got on the scoresheet.
Newcastle’s players were delighted to progress, and they thanked the club’s supporters for turning out in numbers.
Newcastle’s win against Preston extended their winning run to six games across all competitions.
The Magpies have moved to the top of the Championship table, and they are now in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.
Newcastle will find out who they will face in the next round of the League Cup later this evening, when the draw takes place. Benitez’s side are ball number five.
