The Saints midfielder, on loan at League One side Burton Albion, admits he is eager to impress new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Southampton midfielder Jake Hesketh has outlined his desire to break into the Premier League club’s first team.
The 22-year-old has been on the Saints’ books since 2006, coming through the south coast outfit’s academy, according to Transfermarkt.
However, Hesketh has so far struggled to make an impact within their senior setup, making just four appearances so far.
At present, the attacking player is on loan at League One side Burton Albion and has made 19 appearances for the Brewers, scoring twice.
A month ago, Hesketh suggested to the Daily Echo that he wanted to stay put at the Pirelli Stadium beyond January, insisting he was enjoying his football and putting the ball in Burton’s court regarding his continued tenure.
However, with Ralph Hasenhuttl now in charge at St Mary’s and Burton labouring in the third tier, could Hesketh have had a change of mind?
Speaking ahead of the Staffordshire club’s Carabao Cup tie away at Middlesbrough, he spoke to The Guardian about his hopes of eventually succeeding at his parent club, adding that coach Kelvin Davis has been in touch with him regularly during his loan spell.
“It’s nice to know they are watching because as much as I want to impress people here and prove myself to everyone, the people at Southampton are the people I probably want to impress the most because that’s the team I ultimately want to get into,” said Hesketh.
“Whenever the time comes that I go back, I want to impress the new manager and put a case forward to be in his team.”
