Rangers defender Ross McCrorie has been hailed by Ibrox team-mate Jak Alnwick.

Jak Alnwick of Rangers saves from Conor Sammon of Partick Thistle during the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has told The Scottish Herald that he thinks Gers defender Ross McCrorie is similar to former Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini.

The Gers travelled to face Partick Thistle in the Scottish League Cup on Tuesday night, having only drawn 2-2 at Firhill Stadium last Friday.

Pedro Caixinha’s men were made to work for their win, with Daniel Candeias and Eduardo Herrera striking in extra time after Kris Doolan had cancelled out Carlos Pena’s opener.

Now, Rangers move on to focus on the Old Firm derby against Celtic this weekend, where defender Ross McCrorie could be called upon after an injury to Bruno Alves against Partick.

McCrorie, 19, came on as a substitute for Rangers on Tuesday night, and his performance has earned huge praise from pundits and his manager Caixinha.

The teenager, who has come up through the ranks at Ibrox, is now in line to feature against Celtic this weekend, in what would be by far the biggest game of his fledgling career.

Now, Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has told The Scottish Herald that he thinks McCrorie has a ‘massive future’ thanks to his composure and maturity, which was on show against Partick.

Alnwick even suggested that McCrorie is somewhat similar to former Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini, because they are both good with the ball at their feet and calm in possession, backing McCrorie to one day reach the level of the former Argentina international.

“I think Ross has got a massive future,” he said. “If he keeps doing what he’s doing and stays on the right path I don’t see why he can’t be whatever he wants to be. He is a composed centre half, is incredible with both feet and for his age he’s very mature. You could see the other night he dealt with Conor Sammon, who is one of the big men in this league, quite well. I don’t see why he won’t be up there at the top in the years to come.”

“I have played with quite a few people and I am not going to compare him with anyone, but Colocinni. They are a million miles apart in terms of where they are at now. Colocinni is an international centre half. But in terms of the way they play they are similar. They are both good on the ball, can use both feet, are calm. If Ross keeps working hard there is no reason why he can’t be up there with the qualities that he’s got,” he added.
