West Ham United are being tipped by the bookies to sign the Everton defender but he is well past his best.
According to bookmakers Ladbrokes, West Ham United are 4/1 to sign Phil Jagielka in January but, despite the prospect of reuniting with his former Toffees boss David Moyes, the Hammers should not touch the centre-back with a barge pole.
West Ham need more quality in key positions but Jagielka is well past his best and has been a key factor in Everton’s own struggles this season.
The simple fact is, the Toffees need to get shot of some of their under-performing stars and Jagielka could be one of the first out the door, so why on earth would West Ham take a player from a relegation rival, no matter his history?
At 35, the Everton defender is approaching the final throes of his impressive career and a move to West Ham could well be an enticing one if the Toffees finally deem him surplus to requirements. But what Moyes needs is younger, better defenders with the hunger to get a side out of trouble.
If Jagielke was any of those things, he would not have delivered the kind of performances he has over the last few months.
The bookies may think it is a romantic notion for Moyes to bring Jagielka to the London Stadium but West Ham need to look somewhere else entirely.
